January 2016
General: Only current members of this club are authorized to use Lake Poway for the purpose of flying radio controlled model seaplanes. The Club’s operations are normally conducted on Monday afternoons (twice monthly). Operation of model aircraft/components for any purpose outside of the authorized period is prohibited. These rules are necessary for the safety of our members as well as the general public and neccessary to preserve insurance coverage and our continued use of Lake Poway. Our use of this facility is privilege not a right so each member is responsible for complying with the AMA Safety Code, these rules and the enforcement of all rules. Failure to comply with the AMA Safety Code, rules/regulations established by this club and/or the City of Poway Community Services Department shall be considered cause for revocation of club membership and expulsion. Keep in mind that the people of Poway drink the lake water. We are guests in this beautiful park and we don’t want to do anything to wear out our welcome!
AMA Rules
PARK RULES
CLUB RULES
Generally any fixed wing electric or glow aircraft that meets AMA standards and rules is allowed to fly at the lake. Turbine or rocket powered aircraft are not permitted at the lake. Helicopters and quadcopters (drone aircraft of any kind) are also excluded from flying at the site. The Field/Safety Marshal present at the flying session has final say on all aircraft flight operations (including fly or no-fly decisions) at the site.
RC BOAT OPERATING RULES
While our primary use of the lake is for RC float aircraft, we do allow RC electric boats as a secondary usage. You must still be an AMA and Lake Poway Skimmers member to operate any RC plane or boat at the lake. Our AMA club charter and site insurance covers all RC operations and the City of Poway has approved this usage at the lake by our members.
In general we allow the operation of any RC electric boat that is deemed appropriate by the Safety Officer present at the lake. All city, park and clubs rules apply to both aircraft and boat operations at the lake. All boat operators must show they can safely operate and control their boats on the lake in accordance with all city, park and club rules. Only electric and wind powered boats are allowed at the lake (no glow, gas).
When co-operating with RC aircraft, boats must stay clear of the takeoff and landing area directly East (in front) of the end of the pier. Boats should also stay clear of the two pilot stations at the end of the pier by allowing a 30 ft. quite zone behind and to the sides of the end of the pier. Boats may be operated from the shore or on the North and South sides of the pier starting 20 ft. back from the end of the pier. Boats must yield to all aircraft taxing out for takeoff and back to shore after landing.
Up to four wind powered or quite running slow scale (less then 8mph) RC watercraft maybe operated along the North side of the pier. The boating area extends to the log boom but must stay clear of Lake Poway boat dock area North and West of pier. Additionally, up to two speed boat (loud and >8 mph) may be run on the South side of the pier. Boats may range to far shore line but must stay at least 10 ft. out from shore.
Larger speed boats wishing to use lake area East of pier may take turns with aircraft at the two flight stations at the end of the pier. On occasion, when planes are not flying, boats may use the entire lake and may be operated from the end of the pier. Boats and planes may race (or interact with) each other with, prior agreement between all parties, East of end of pier.
Generally speaking as we are a small club we do not have many planes and/or boats on the lake at any one time. Sharing of the lake has not been a problem and the rules above provide guidelines for co-existence of planes, slow boats and speed boats on the lake at the same time. Members usually work things out to everyone’s mutual satisfaction. As usual, the Safety Officer has final say on all aircraft or boating operations at the lake.
